Hazel in the Kitchen

Y'all know what a good little eater Hazel is, right? Normally I fix her food and hand her the spoon. My job is basically done at that point; she can feed herself until just a smear is left on her plate. She does make some messes, particularly with food falling down onto (and under, somehow) her pants legs, so I get baby girl totally undressed before eating.

Today I got her all set up and turned to wash dishes. I think she was finished before her food was all gone (dinner would be the first time - EVER), and so got bored.

There was food all over that baby, and a peculiarly large amount on the floor. Oh, and also that little snack she was saving for later on her shoulder, there.

Later on we were having some water and I thought it might be a great time to take the lid off the sippy cup and let her pick it up herself.

So, she can't use a cup just yet.

Turns out I should not take my advice all the time. :)

I have finally, in the midst of all the reading & typing & cooking & not showering I've been doing, edited all the pictures from Hazel's birthday party.

And they suck.

I'm not kidding. They're all...dark. And kind of red. I know, it's probably just me who cares, but whatever. I'm consoling myself with all the pretty pictures I have of her on every other day, and I've concluded that birthdays are too hyped up and we may start celebrating her birthday on September 8th.

So here are a few (grandmothers, you are getting cd's with more):

Yes, that's right. Her cake had no icing. My baby hasn't had food coloring, or refined sugar, or a sugar high - arrest me!!

And this was taken a few days after her actual birthday; the sweet, adorable secretaries Amos works with (Hazel's "aunts") had a little something for her at school last Friday. This time I made up an "icing" that's really just nuefchatel with a little honey in it, whipped all to hell so it's kind of fluffy. That kid went nuts over it, so that made us happy. Seeing her covered in food did not. For y'all that don't know, Hazel is a pretty clean eater. It jankled my nerves to see white stuff all on her hands, then clothes, table, chair, us, you name it.

This is scary. Eleven whole months! It's a cliche because it's true; the time just flies away.

I heard through the grapevine that I don't have enough videos of Hazel up here! Here's a newer one that we took a couple of weeks ago. We started giving Hazel applesauce, and we thought it would be fun to see how she likes a real apple.

By the way, the thumbnail image that shows before the video plays is HILARIOUS. Hazel looks terrified, Amos has apple on his lip, and I'm laughing at it.

1st Tooth!

The more I look at this picture the weirder I think it is.

Anyway, this is her tooth! It peeked through a little while ago, but it's finally all the way through the gum. It's really sharp, too. I was feeding her, and she's still a little droopy from being sick, so I thought this was a great time to get a picture of this, since she was less likely to fight like crazy. While she didn't struggle, she did give me the dead eyes, so I can't decide who won.

I've been gone a lot recently, so this entry is going to fast forward to now.

I still feel a little off, and I bet it's because I'm not getting enough sleep. Now we're at the point where I usually fall asleep nursing her at least once a night, meaning she spends about 2 hours in our bed every night. I'm hoping that this will taper off soon, especially because...

She is eating real baby food!!! This past Saturday was her first time. Amos and I, being the kind of people we are, wanted to make her baby food, so he made carrots. They, um, didn't work out very well.

No, no no nononono!!

She actually leaned over her chair and acted like she was gagging (which she was not). This was alarming, though, so I just nursed her the rest of the night. In retrospect we decided that Amos didn't cook them down enough, and that the texture was probably bothering her. We got some carrot baby food from the store and she LOVES IT. She ate about 1/4 of a stage 2 sized jar, and I have no idea how much that actually is but it looked like a lot for her. Seriously, she wolfed it down and was a pro. My baby eats food now!

Hazel hit another big milestone on Friday; she rolled over back to front. She was on the playmat, crying while I had my lunch, and she just kind of kicked herself over. She's been doing these backbends:

...which are creepy, but I figured were probably her way of trying to move and see and do, and sure enough she kicked herself over while doing one of these numbers. I had the camera beside me, but only managed to grab a shot of her on her side after the big one. Her arm was stuck underneath, and she flipped herself right back over, but in the next couple of weeks I'm sure she'll perfect the maneuver.

Which brings me to my next point...she's 5 months old today. Things are happening too fast! I always rolled my eyes at parents who talked about this, thinking that it couldn't be as quick as they were saying, but it is. I was wrong. Stop it.

She likes rice cereal mixed with WATER!!!!

You have no idea how happy this makes me. See, she loves the cereal mixed with breast milk, and screams like Satan's favorite banshee when we try to feed her cereal & formula. But breast milk doesn't grow on trees, you know. It's hard to come by. It should be called breast gold. For you all who are fortunate enough to not have overworked boobies, that means you have to pump. Like a cow. It's bothersome, it's weird, and it hurts (me, at least), and it presents a unique catch-22. Because Hazel's ready for solid food she's nursing around the clock, which makes it even harder for me to find a time where she's not hungry and my breasts are full enough to work with the pump. So I've been waking up around 6 and to go into the cold living room to pump while my breasts are super full. This means only feeding the baby on one side all night, so one's all empty and one is rock hard and painful. When pumping doesn't work, because it just doesn't for me, I let Hazel get things going. That means milk does come out in the pump, but Hazel's pissed because she got taken away from breakfast and has to wait at least 30 more minutes before I can get enough to make the cereal. Do all this one-handed and on the floor, because Amos is getting ready for work or already gone by now. So, in short, I want to commit harikari for one measly ounce of breast milk.

We tried mixing the cereal with water for the first time today, after a disastrous morning feeding with formula, and she did amazing! I was so, so elated that she's ok with cereal and water. I'm tossing out that formula and never looking back!!!!!

Plus she kept grabbing for the spoon, so finally we let her have it. Some of it actually did get in her mouth :)

Tomorrow Amos leaves for a two-day conference in Binghamton, meaning it will be girls only in the house! Hazel and I have spent approximately two nights alone together thus far, and they were both in the hospital. Pros: 24-hour nurses available, pain medicine available, meals prepared & brought to me. Cons: major bleeding, pain in the hurtiest place imaginable, screaming newborn who ate every 10 minutes, new mother scared out of her mind. Ok, so this time around it won't be so dramatic. I mean, I've had her for 4 1/2 months now, and she's not as crazy as she was when she first arrived on the scene, but still I'm a little nervous. He'll be gone from Wednesday morning to about midnight on Thursday, which I guess is technically only a day and a half. I'm worried mostly about the evenings, which is when Amos watches Hazel and I can do all the stuff I've put off all day. Like showering. So it may be a smooth and easy two nights, but perhaps smelly too, I can't promise you anything. Or maybe we'll have a fashion show.

So we started Hazel on rice cereal a week ago today, and she LOVES IT. We started her the same day the doctor cleared it; actually the doctor said anytime the next two months, which still includes a mere 5 hours later ok! Anyway after a hesitant start, on both Hazel's and our ends, we've gotten to a good equilibrium. She likes it mushy, like overcooked grits, and not watery like the books suggested. She also is pretty interested in the cup and spoon.

Oh and she freaking loves that bib. Every time we put it on she gets all cross-eyed staring at the frogs! Whoever gave us that, double thanks!!

I'm excited though because my friend Britt is coming over in an hour or so with her son Trent. Trent is maybe a week younger than Hazel; Britt and I commiserated many a time during our pregnancies, and it is uniquely fun to talk baby stuff with someone who is going through the exact same stuff I am at the same time. Both being first-time mothers, we have quite a bit to discuss! Anyway I have to go make this place (and myself) look semi-decent, and that will probably take more than an hour!
