If you didn't already know we were related, this picture might convince you.

Hazel and I were trying to pose for a picture (meaning I was trying to get her to stand still and look at the camera simultaneously) and she bumped into me, causing me to accidentally fire the trigger. This is a pretty funny picture, though, and honestly my favorite kind of photo is this kind. That wide-eyed wondrous expression on her face and the dorky, bug-eyed one on mine are really how we look. And that's just fine by me.

As you may know, Amos and I have been pretty strict in a bedtime routine for Hazel. We started giving her a bath and reading The Goodnight Book when she was about 6 weeks old. Gradually she got to the point where she understands as soon as we take off her clothes for the tub that it's bedtime. Now she's so used to the routine that we can have a little fun without making her fight sleeping!

Murphy's Law states the following:

Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. Also, all the sweaters Laura knits for Hazel will be at least 2 sizes too big.

You may think that I added that last bit. Well, it's always been there, but no one cared because it didn't make sense until I started knitting sweaters for Hazel and they all turned out HUGELY HUGE.

Knitters, you might be able to tell that this yarn in super bulky weight. I know - not all that practical for a toddler sweater, but I had 2 skeins from the first year I started knitting, and what else could it make? I actually had to hunt down and purchase another skein for the sleeves, but that's another story. Anyway, it's huge. It's a parka. For a three-year-old. A big three-year-old. It's cute, and I do like the big buttons we picked out today (even if they aren't spaced evenly; that's something else I can't seem to do correctly), but I wish it fit her right now. Next year she is going to wear a hand-knit EVERY DAY OF THE WINTER.

Also, as a side note: when I was trying to get pictures of her in this, which is much harder than it used to be when she couldn't walk, I made her wear a plastic cup as a hat. She wore it, which is the funny part!

Also, she liked to bend her head waaaay down and lick the top button. I mean, it's her sweater, right? Mama's hand-knits are cool to wear in 7 years AND taste great!

Hazel is growing up so fast y'all. It is just ridiculous! She is 11 weeks old tomorrow. It seems like she's been here forever and not at all, all at the same time. She can hold up her head fantastically now, even pushing herself up on her arms when she's on her stomach. She's wearing 6 month sized pants because she's so tall, and all her NB sized stuff is just crazy looking on her, if it even still fits on her. She sleeps all night, smiles all the time, and is getting really vocal with cooing and squealing. She also splashes in the tub!! Adorable.

Today we tried out the umbrella stroller for the first time. That's the one, for you kids without kids, that is small and lightweight versus those montrosities with cupholders and shelves you see people wheeling around the mall. We had to wait until she was able to hold up her head very well, and since today I was bored inside and she was fussy if I set her down, we tried it out by walking to the library. I had that kid so bundled up it was hilarious. She had on a long-sleeved onesie, thick double-lined pants, socks, boots, a knit sweater, and a knit hat, plus she was covered with a chenille blanket. She was set, lol! But it was flurrying (is that a word?) when we were out, so I wanted to make sure she was warm. Hazel seemed to love the weather, or at least not mind, because she was quiet the whole time, even all through the library. She fell asleep on the way back, though.

We had major plans for the butterbean's first Halloween. I made her costume about a month ago and have been dying to post a picture of it, but somehow found the willpower to restrain myself. So, I present Hazel the Meatball!!

We went out and visited places on the green, then came back and sat outside to hand out candy. Hazel lasted maybe five minutes and then passed completely out. She woke up in time for the parade, which is when all the kids/parents walk down the street in their costumes flanked by fire trucks playing scary music. She was really into the flashing fire engine lights! Here are a few more photos of my cutie in her costume.

I sit in my armchair nursing Hazel. A LOT.

Since I have guarenteed chill time for hours everyday, and because I'm a compulsive multitasker, I usually try to knit something while I'm hanging out with her. I chose this pinwheel blanket because of its simplicity and because I could use up some of the baby yarn in my stash which would otherwise just be donated somewhere else. Also I got to learn how to make a ruffle with this blanket, which is totally addictive though time consuming; I went from 350 stitches to 1400 in just three rows to make the ruffle. It took me over 2 hours to bind off on this project, but it's worth it because the ruffle is so freaking cute!

Yesterday she smiled for the first time <3

I had some suspicions of smiles before, but this was definitely different. I was playing with her around 9 am, wiggling her nose with my finger, and suddenly she grinned at me! She did it three separate times, even doing a repeat performance later that night for Amos. I haven't managed to snap a photo...yet. Rest assured it'll be up on here like white on rice when I do!

How can things be happening so quickly?

She's already a month old. It's unbelievable!! But I can tell she has made some serious progress. She focuses on our faces now, will quiet down and sometimes even turn her head if we shake a rattle near her face, and has active alert periods where she interacts with us in her own 1-minute attention span sort of way. I found out that if she's crying and I brush her face with my hair she'll stop, and she loves to be sat up and bounced on my knee.

Today we got out of the house for our first real outing. Hazel and I have been to the doctor together and have driven Amos to work, but that constitutes the extent of me + Hazel + the car. Today, however, we went to my friend Carrie's house and hung out with her and her almost 1-year-old Emma. I had a very fun, relaxing time, but was also humbled by the experience. Getting around with a small baby isn't just hard because you have to drag their whole boudoir with you; I had to basically shanghai all Emma's furniture and even borrow some of her clothes to keep Hazel dry & un-naked. It's hard to explain, this neediness. I was prepared, too. I had a back-up onesie, hat, and socks, plus plastic bags to put her dirty clothes in, wipes, diapers, the whole thing - but in my preparations I didn't think needing a back-up back-up would ever happen, not for just a small trip at least. It's going to take some getting used to.

Tonight after another day of napping Hazel was awake for a few happy hours, so she and Momma played around with the camera a bit. Happy 1-Month Birthday kid!!

Last night I was nursing Hazel and still eating my dinner with the other hand. I had picked up this delicious apple-cinnamon muffin and was having that for dessert. After we were done, and she was awake for once, I put her in the bouncy seat beside Amos, who was working at his desk, while I went off to take a bath.

Moments later I hear Amos yell, "Ewww! That is so gross!!!" from the back room. I'm thinking Hazel had a blow-out or something, but no. He comes laughing into the bathroom to tell me that our darling girl had a piece of muffin in her ear.

I can't decide if I should be laughing or crying! It was just one piece, and she definitely doesn't have anything else in there...I mean, it is kind of funny. But also a little embarrassing too :)
